Opening Thought
When we hear the word Dharavi, different images appear in different minds.
Some see poverty.
Some see entrepreneurship.
Some see illegal settlements.
Some see hope.
Some see political debate.
Some see human resilience.
Perhaps none of these images alone tells the complete story.
Every city has places that challenge our assumptions. Dharavi is one of them.
This article is not written to support or oppose any redevelopment project, political opinion, or ideology. It is an attempt to observe Dharavi through the lenses of history, mathematics, psychology, economics, and humanity.
Every mathematician knows that no complex equation can be solved by observing only one variable. Cities are no different. Dharavi is not merely a location on a map - it is a living equation composed of history, migration, livelihoods, relationships, aspirations, and identity. To understand it, we must first understand its variables.
Historical Background
Long before it became internationally known, Dharavi was a small fishing village surrounded by mangroves and mudflats near Mahim Creek.
During the late nineteenth century, Bombay expanded rapidly under British rule. Industries considered unsuitable for the city centre—including leather tanning, pottery, and other polluting occupations—were gradually shifted towards the outskirts.
Thousands of migrants from different parts of India arrived in search of work.
Potters from Gujarat, leather workers from Tamil Nadu, embroidery workers from Uttar Pradesh, small artisans, daily wage labourers, and countless families built their homes wherever land was available.
Over generations, temporary shelters slowly became permanent neighbourhoods.
Without a master plan, Dharavi evolved into one of the world's most densely populated urban settlements.
It became not merely a settlement but a complete social ecosystem.

• Area: approximately 2.39 square kilometres
• Estimated population: 700,000 to 1 million residents
• One of the highest population densities in the world.
• Around 15,000 small manufacturing units and nearly 5,000 businesses.
• Major industries include pottery, leather, textiles, recycling, food production, jewellery, and small engineering.
• Products manufactured here reach national as well as international markets.
• Many families have lived here for multiple generations.
Dharavi is therefore both a residential settlement and a major centre of informal economic activity.
Ground Stories
Numbers tell one story.
People tell another.
Walk through Dharavi and one may notice narrow lanes filled with workshops.
A tiny room may function as a home by night and a factory by day.
A potter continues a tradition inherited from grandparents.
A leather artisan exports products abroad without ever owning a large factory.
A recycling worker quietly contributes to environmental sustainability.
Children attend school while helping family businesses after class.
Challenges certainly exist.
Limited sanitation, crowded housing, shared infrastructure, uncertain property rights, and redevelopment anxieties remain everyday realities.
Yet behind every door is not merely a structure.
There is a family. A livelihood. A memory. A dream.
Social and Emotional Dimensions
Redevelopment is rarely only about buildings.
It is also about belonging.
People become emotionally attached to neighbourhoods where they celebrated festivals, raised children, built friendships, and struggled together.
Relocating structures may appear technically simple on paper.
Relocating memories is never simple.
Communities develop invisible networks of trust, support, identity, language, occupation, and culture over decades.
These human connections cannot be measured only in square feet.

Externally, it is often viewed through the lens of scarcity.

The absence of resources does not necessarily imply the absence of innovation.

Urban development is often viewed as:
Development = Infrastructure
But Social Math suggests:
Sustainable Development = Infrastructure + Livelihood + Dignity + Culture + Community
If one variable becomes zero, the equation becomes incomplete.
Life Math Equation
Every family living in Dharavi solves an equation every day.
Life = Income - Expenses + Relationships + Hope
Sometimes income is small.
Hope keeps the equation positive.
Soul Math Reflection
Buildings can be relocated.
Memories cannot.
In Soul Math,

This blog taught me to that judging a place or area just by their locality is very easy but no one is ready to dive into it’s history or understand how it was before and why is it that it is like today we often seek Dharavi as a place of poverty so much that many are not even ready to travel there but it has a huge and an amazing history to it which shows what’s great and sustainable lifestyle people lived there before and hoping it also evolves like that again. In addition I loved the use of equations given by you which help simplify the understanding more behind what is important and what actually makes a lifestyle that is worth living and enjoying
