Your Attitude Matters Part 4
A Real Story from the Late 1980s
Opening
In life, every celebration carries an invisible equation.
Joy + respect = harmony
Joy − respect = chaos
Attitude decides which side of the equation we choose.
This real incident from the late 1980s unfolded during a wedding celebration - a space meant for happiness, music, and togetherness. Yet, even in moments of joy, human behavior is tested. This story is close to my heart because it taught me an early lesson: humor without sensitivity can turn into humiliation, and confidence without restraint can invite consequences.
The Story: When Celebration Turned into a Lesson
I had visited a prosperous town known for its many private bus owners. The occasion was the wedding of my close friend Jagdish Chowdhari’s sister.
An interesting social contrast surrounded me that day.
Jagdish was my intimate friend, while Rajnish bhai was a close friend of my elder brother. The two belonged to opposing groups and were known rivals. Yet, circumstances placed me comfortably with both - a reminder that relationships often depend on attitude more than alignment.
I arrived early and first visited Rajnish bhai’s home. He welcomed me warmly, surprised and pleased to see me. Over snacks and soft drinks, we spoke at length before I left to join Jagdish.
On the way, I met the wedding procession - a lively moving band, music echoing through the streets. Jagdish was there with many common friends, and the atmosphere was festive.
As the dancing intensified, a tall, fair, and confident young man entered the scene. He danced exceptionally well - energetic, expressive, and clearly trained. People admired his performance.
Among the dancers was Surjeet, one of our friends, a mechanical engineering student. He was enjoying himself innocently, though clearly new to dancing.
The skilled dancer noticed him.
In a playful but increasingly mocking manner, he invited Surjeet to compete. Surjeet tried sincerely, but the difference in skill was obvious. Laughter followed - some good-natured, some uncomfortable.
The dancer, enjoying attention, crossed a line. He exaggerated expressions, ridiculed Surjeet, and finally made a humiliating gesture meant to demean him publicly.
Surjeet tolerated it longer than expected - respecting the occasion and the friendship involved. But repeated provocation slowly erased patience.
In a sudden moment of reaction, Surjeet spat out the paan juice he had been chewing - it landed on the dancer’s face.
Instantly, celebration turned tense.
What had begun as comedy threatened to become conflict. Friends and elders intervened quickly. Both individuals were separated, calm was restored, and the situation was contained before it escalated.
Interestingly, many present felt that the reaction, though unfortunate, was triggered by continuous humiliation. The incident ended without further damage - but the lesson lingered.

- Talent does not justify disrespect
- Entertainment should never cost someone’s dignity
- Silence has limits when humiliation repeats
Attitude is not only about controlling anger - it is also about knowing when humor becomes harm.
Key Takeaways

From the Desk of the Author
This story remains close to my heart because it showed me, at a young age, how quickly joy can collapse when dignity is compromised.
Celebrations are mirrors of society. They reveal who we are when emotions run high and attention is abundant.

An Honest Question to Readers
Where should the line be drawn between harmless fun and humiliating behavior - and how would your attitude respond if that line were crossed?

Where Mathematics Meets Mindset

Honestly speaking, I have watched many episodes of Bigg Boss 2025 and have understood the impact and consequences of humor. It all depends on the bond you share with the audience and their willingness to accept it in a non-judgmental way. At times, when the audience felt that the person speaking was crossing the line, their immediate response was to stop listening to them thereafter. There have been many controversies because of comedy and humor. A simple rule - always take the consent of person you are going to speak/make fun about. Comedy talks have tendency to cross lines and go to the extreme but then being empathetic also plays a vital role in the process.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely well observed, Miss Hasti 👍
ReplyDeleteYou’ve touched the core of the issue — humor works only when trust and consent exist. Without that bond, even a light joke turns into judgment, and once the line is crossed, the listener emotionally disconnects.
Empathy is the real boundary-marker of comedy. When empathy is present, humor heals; when it’s absent, humor harms. Bigg Boss is indeed a live laboratory of this behavioral truth.
Thank you for articulating this so sensitively 🌱
