But perhaps its deeper mathematics lies in its adjustment.
The Mumbaikar: A Product of Many Equations
Mumbai was not built from one community, one language or one occupation.
The city's history began with seven islands whose early communities included the Kolis, and Mumbai later grew through trade, migration, industry, education and transport.
That history created something remarkable:
Different people had to learn how to share limited space.

Hindi on the train.

Mumbai contains enormous diversity.

Religion.

This ability to switch linguistic registers is itself a form of cognitive and social flexibility.

Consider another familiar Mumbai scene.
A group of commuters begins a bhajan.

This part deserves honesty.
Mumbai's ladies' compartments have created important spaces for women to travel, learn mobility and build everyday networks.
But research also shows that women continue to negotiate crowding, safety and harassment concerns.
