Introduction

For centuries, hypnotism was surrounded by mystery. Some called it magic, while others dismissed it as an illusion. Today, neuroscience and psychology offer a more balanced understanding. Rather than supernatural power, hypnotism is increasingly viewed as a special state of focused attention in which suggestions may have a stronger influence on thoughts, feelings, or behaviour.

A Brief Journey Through History

1770s - Franz Mesmer

Mesmer proposed the theory of "animal magnetism." Although his explanation was later rejected, his demonstrations sparked worldwide curiosity about suggestion and human behaviour.

1840s - James Braid

Scottish surgeon James Braid introduced the word Hypnosis, derived from the Greek god of sleep, Hypnos. He demonstrated that hypnosis was linked more closely to focused attention than to mysterious magnetic forces.

1950s - 1960s

Medical organizations in several countries began recognizing hypnosis as a useful clinical technique for selected conditions when performed by trained professionals.

Modern Era

Brain imaging techniques such as EEG and fMRI continue to investigate how hypnosis influences attention, perception, and pain processing.


Different Forms of Hypnosis

Clinical Hypnotherapy

Used by trained healthcare professionals as an adjunct to treatment for conditions such as pain management, anxiety, and certain habits. It is generally considered alongside - not as a replacement for - evidence-based medical care.

Ericksonian Hypnosis

Developed by Milton Erickson, this approach relies on stories, metaphors, and indirect suggestions rather than direct commands.

Stage Hypnosis

Designed primarily for entertainment. Volunteers who are highly responsive and willing to participate are often selected, making the experience very different from clinical hypnosis.

Self-Hypnosis

A structured method in which individuals use relaxation, focused attention, and positive suggestions to support personal goals.

Conversational and Coaching Approaches

Some coaching methods draw on hypnotic language patterns. However, the effectiveness of techniques associated with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) remains scientifically debated.


The Science Behind Hypnosis

Research suggests that hypnosis can influence the way the brain processes attention and perception.

Scientists have observed:

• Greater concentration on a specific task

• Reduced awareness of external distractions

• Changes in brain activity associated with attention and self-monitoring

Research over several decades suggests that hypnosis may enhance outcomes for some conditions when combined with established treatments, although effectiveness varies among individuals.

Neuroimaging studies have also shown changes in brain regions involved in attention and pain perception during hypnosis.
