Three Mumbai Local Stories Where Appearance Lost to Evidence
Background
I have been travelling by Mumbai local trains since 1998.
Three decades of local-train journeys can teach you mathematics that no textbook can fully explain.
You observe:
Speed.
Density.
Timing.
Queues.
Networks.
Human behaviour.
And above all...
people!
Mumbai locals are not merely a transport system.
They are moving classrooms of human psychology.
During peak hours, regular commuters often travel according to fixed routines—same station, same compartment, sometimes even the same group of fellow passengers.
Strangers may initially find it difficult to enter a packed compartment.
But once someone is inside and genuinely needs help, the same passengers can become remarkably supportive.
A fainting passenger may receive water.
Someone needing a seat may be accommodated.
A person in distress may suddenly find several strangers trying to help.
There is an interesting contradiction here:
Crowded trains can create both boundaries and extraordinary cooperation.
And over the years, I have witnessed several moments that made me laugh, think and occasionally ask myself:
"Is this really happening?"
Today, I want to share three incidents from different decades.
Names are unnecessary.
The lessons are universal.

Opening Thought
How much can we understand about a person simply by looking at them?
A shirt?
A pair of trousers?
A compartment?
A ticket?
A first impression?
Sometimes we observe one small signal...
and immediately construct an entire story.
But mathematics teaches us something important:
One data point is not the whole dataset.
If we judge an entire person from one visible characteristic, we are effectively trying to estimate a population from an extremely biased sample.
A shirt is one data point.
A person's appearance is one data point.
One behaviour is one data point.
One conversation is one data point.
Person ≠ Single Data Point
And Mumbai local trains taught me the same lesson...
many times.
CASE 1
"Why Are You Taking Me Out?"
It was a crowded local train.
A businessman had deliberately entered a First Class compartment.
A Ticket Collector (TC) happened to enter the compartment as well.
Perhaps the crowd had made ticket checking easier there.
The checking began.
One passenger after another showed tickets and passes.
Eventually, the TC reached the businessman.
The ticket was checked.
And there was the problem.
He had a Second Class ticket.
The TC asked him to remain there until the checking of the compartment was completed.
The train reached the next station.
The TC then asked the passenger to step outside the compartment.
Perhaps he intended to deal with the matter according to the applicable railway rules outside the moving train.
But the passenger surprised everyone.
He looked directly at the TC and said loudly:
"Why are you taking me out? Tell me here itself. How much is the fine?"
The compartment suddenly became silent.
The TC looked slightly surprised.
Perhaps he had expected resistance.
Instead, the passenger was ready to settle the matter officially.
The fine was paid.
The passenger calmly returned to his seat.
The train continued.
And the compartment quietly returned to its normal rhythm.
The whole drama had lasted only a few minutes.
But there was a lesson hiding inside it.
What Did We Assume?
Perhaps some passengers were expecting:
Passenger without proper ticket → Argument → Excuse → Resistance
Instead they saw:
Passenger with wrong-class ticket → Acceptance → Payment → Resolution
The important point was not whether the passenger had made the correct choice initially.
He hadn't.
The interesting part was how quickly the situation changed when both sides moved from assumption to evidence.
Problem + Rule + Resolution = Closure
No unnecessary drama.
No complicated argument.
Just:
Check → Establish fact → Apply rule → Resolve.
CASE 2
“Either I Am a Fool... Or You Are!”
This one happened early in the morning.
A man entered a First Class compartment wearing a simple T-shirt and half-pants.
One passenger noticed him.
He immediately assumed:
"First Class? This outfit? Surely something is wrong!"
He warned him:
" Brother, this is First Class. If the TC comes, you'll have to pay a fine."
The man ignored him.
He looked exhausted.
And soon...
he fell asleep.
But the other passenger wasn't finished.
A little later:
"Next station par change kar lena. TC aaya toh problem hogi."
Still no response.
Then came another comment:
"Logon ko samjhana bhi mushkil hai. Kahaan-kahaan se log aa jaate hain!"
That was enough.
The sleepy passenger finally opened his eyes.
He looked at the man.
And, in perfectly clear English, said:
"Listen! Either I am a fool, or you are. One of us is definitely mad."
The other passenger was stunned.
The sleepy man continued:
"My wife is in hospital. I haven't slept properly the whole night."
Then he pointed towards his belongings.
"I have a First Class pass. I have money. I have every right to be here."
Then came the killer question:
"What exactly do you want from me?"
Silence.
The entire conversation had suddenly changed direction.
The passenger who thought he was helping...
had actually been judging.
The Psychology Behind the Incident
The observer had made a classic cognitive shortcut:
Appearance → Assumption → Conclusion
He saw:
T-shirt + half-pants
and mentally calculated:
Casual clothing = probably not First Class passenger.
But the actual equation was:
Clothing ≠ Ticket
And more importantly:
Appearance ≠ Circumstance
The passenger was not irresponsible.
He was exhausted.
He was worried about his wife.
And he had a valid pass.
The observer had simply been working with incomplete data.
CASE 3
"You Come Here!" - "No, You Come Here!"
This one was perhaps the funniest.
Two men were sitting in a First Class compartment.
From their clothing and appearance, they looked like ordinary rural travellers.
A TC standing on the platform noticed them.
He called out:
"Baahar aao! Suna nahi? Jaldi!"
The two men looked towards him.
Instead of getting out...
they confidently replied:
"Tu idhar aa! Hum kyon aayein?"
The TC was clearly not expecting that response.
He entered the compartment.
He checked their tickets.
And then came the surprise.
Both had valid First Class tickets.
The atmosphere changed instantly.
A few passengers smiled.
The two men remained perfectly calm.
The TC had looked at them and formed one hypothesis.
The tickets supplied the evidence.
And the evidence rejected the hypothesis.
From Observation to Hypothesis
In statistics, we don't normally accept a conclusion simply because one observation appears convincing.
We ask:
What is the evidence?
The same principle applies to human behaviour.
We can think of our three railway incidents as a simple hypothesis-testing exercise:
H₀: Appearance gives us a reliable indication of reality.
Then comes the evidence:
- Second Class ticket → but willingness to pay the fine
- Casual clothing → but valid First Class pass
- Rural appearance → but valid First Class tickets
The evidence challenges the original assumption.
Therefore:
H₀: Rejected
Not because appearance is meaningless...
but because appearance alone is insufficient evidence.
THE THREE CASES TOGETHER
Three different situations.
Three different assumptions.
And three different reminders.
Case 1:
"He entered First Class, so perhaps he will resist the fine."
He didn't.
Case 2:
"He is dressed casually, so perhaps he doesn't belong here."
He did.
Case 3:
"They don't look like First Class passengers, so they probably aren't."
They were.
And suddenly our three observations become a beautiful Mathivation equation:
Observation ≠ Assumption ≠ Conclusion
Behavioural Economics Connection
Human beings constantly make decisions with incomplete information.
We use shortcuts.
We estimate.
We classify.
We predict.
This is often useful.
But shortcuts can also produce bias.
In behavioural economics and psychology, people may rely on cues such as:
- appearance,
- familiarity,
- past experience,
- social status,
- clothing,
- context,
- first impressions.
These cues can help us make quick decisions.
But a cue is not proof.
Signal ≠ Certainty
The three railway stories demonstrate this beautifully.
A person's clothing is a signal.
A person's behaviour is a signal.
Even a person's location in a compartment is a signal.
But the actual ticket is evidence.
Representativeness Heuristic
We often use the representativeness heuristic - we judge something based on how closely it resembles the mental picture we already have.
For example:
Casual clothes → ordinary traveller → probably not First Class
But that chain is an assumption, not a fact.
The human mind loves shortcuts.
Mathematics asks us to slow down and check the data.
Mind says: “Looks like…”
Evidence says: “Let's verify.”
The Mathivation Equation
Observation + Assumption ≠ Truth
A better decision model is:
Observation → Hypothesis → Evidence → Context → Conclusion
In mathematics, we test our assumptions.
In science, we test our hypotheses.
In life, perhaps we should do the same.
Because:
Appearance is data.
Evidence is information.
Context is meaning.
Conclusion is a responsibility.
And when we skip the middle steps...

The Mathematics of First Impressions
Suppose we observe three things:
Clothing = C
Compartment = F
Ticket = T
A careless observer might conclude:
C + F → No Valid Ticket
But the correct logical structure is:
C + F → Hypothesis
Then:
Ticket → Verification
Therefore:
Hypothesis + Evidence = Better Conclusion
That tiny distinction can prevent a lot of unnecessary judgement.
Mathivation Research Lab Perspective
A local train is an interesting behavioural laboratory.
Thousands of people occupy the same limited space.
Different occupations.
Different incomes.
Different languages.
Different personalities.
Different destinations.
And yet...
for a short period, they share the same system.
The compartment creates a temporary community.
Someone may be a stranger at 8:31 a.m.
Five minutes later, that same stranger may be holding your bag while you get down.
Someone may look unapproachable.
Yet be the first person to offer water to a passenger who feels unwell.
Someone may look wealthy.
Someone may look ordinary.
Someone may look authoritative.
Someone may look completely out of place.
But the human story behind the appearance may be entirely different.
A Simple Passenger Equation
Perhaps Mumbai local trains teach us this:
Human Value ≠ Visible Appearance
And:
Person ≠ First Impression
We can even create a playful equation:
First Impression = Limited Data × Fast Judgement
The danger increases when:
Fast Judgement > Evidence
Human Error of the Day
Premature Judgement
We often don't wait for the complete information.
We see.
We interpret.
We conclude.
And sometimes...
we even lecture the other person before checking whether our assumption is correct!
Case 2 gave us the perfect example.
The man thought he was educating another passenger.
The other passenger was actually carrying the information he needed:
A valid First Class pass.

But a sample is not the population.

And that is mathematics teaching humility.
Before making a conclusion about a person...
perhaps we should ask:
"Do I have enough data?"
Mumbai Local Math
Mumbai local trains themselves operate through a beautiful mathematical balance:
Time + Capacity + Flow + Discipline + Cooperation
When one variable fails, the entire system feels the effect.
Human behaviour is similar.
A crowded compartment requires:
Space + Awareness + Cooperation
A human judgement requires:
Observation + Evidence + Context
Remove context...
and even a perfectly observed fact can produce an imperfect conclusion.

The man in shorts?
He had a valid First Class pass and a wife waiting in hospital.
The two men who "didn't look" like First Class passengers?
They had perfectly valid First Class tickets.
Three stories.
Three assumptions.
Three corrections.
And one common lesson:
Before judging a person, check the evidence.
Because sometimes...
the person who looks out of place...
has the right ticket.
And sometimes the person who thinks he knows everything...
simply hasn't checked enough data.
That is not just Mumbai Math.
That is...
LIFE MATH.
And when the assumption becomes bigger than the evidence...
THIS IS TOO MUCH!
