Part 11 - The Lantern That Refused to Go Out!
Background
Some competitions require knowledge.
Some require talent.
Some require creativity.
And then there are competitions where the only qualification is:
“Can you make your story bigger than everyone else's?”
Imagine a village gathering where three friends participate in a rather unusual contest:
The Biggest, Strangest and Most Unbelievable Story Competition!
The rule is simple:
Tell something so extraordinary that nobody can immediately prove it false.
The audience is ready.
The contestants are confident.
And, as usual in THIS IS TOO MUCH!, things begin reasonably...
and then become completely unreasonable!
Contestant No. 1
The Charpai of the Century!
The first contestant stood proudly and announced:
“My grandfather had such a huge charpai that the entire village could sit on it!”
The audience burst into laughter and applause.
Someone shouted:
“Wah! Your grandfather had a charpai or a village community hall?”
Everyone laughed even louder.
But the contestant smiled confidently.
He had only just begun.
Contestant No. 2
The Bamboo Rainmaker!
The second contestant wasn't impressed.
He stepped forward and said:
“That's nothing! My grandfather had a bamboo so tall and strong that whenever the village experienced a long dry spell, he would simply shake the bamboo...”
He paused dramatically.
Everyone leaned forward.
“...and the clouds would start raining!”
For a moment there was silence.
Then ....
The entire gathering exploded with laughter.
Someone asked:
“So your grandfather was a farmer... or the first meteorological department?”
The second contestant proudly stepped aside.
Surely nobody could beat that.
Or so they thought.
Contestant No. 3
The Lantern That Went Fishing!
The third contestant slowly walked to the microphone.
He looked at the other two.
Then he smiled.
“My grandfather had a lantern...”
The audience waited.
“A very big lantern.”
Someone whispered:
“Here we go again!”
He continued:
“That lantern used to burn all the time.”
The audience was still calm.
After all, that's what lanterns are supposed to do.
Then came the twist.
“One day, the lantern got lost.”
People nodded.
Reasonable.
Lanterns can get lost.
Then he delivered the punchline:
“After searching everywhere, my grandfather found it at the bottom of a pond...”
The audience was silent.
The contestant continued:
“...and it was still burning!”
The hall erupted.
People were laughing, clapping and shouting.
One person finally stood up and yelled:
“Enough! At least put the lantern out! I can't digest this!”
Another shouted:
“The charpai was possible!”
Someone else replied:
“The bamboo was doubtful!”
And the first person screamed:
“But a burning lantern under water? THIS IS TOO MUCH!”
The Mathematics of Exaggeration
The three contestants demonstrate an interesting pattern.
Contestant 1:
Big object → Bigger imagination
Contestant 2:
Big object → Extraordinary function
Contestant 3:
Big object → Violation of common experience
The exaggeration kept increasing.
We can express the comic progression as:
Ordinary → Unusual → Impossible → THIS IS TOO MUCH!
The third story didn't merely increase the size of the claim.
It changed the rules of the system.
That's where the audience finally stopped accepting the story.
The Human Lesson
We do something similar in real life.
A person tells us something slightly exaggerated.
We accept it.
Then the next statement becomes bigger.
We still listen.
Then another exaggeration arrives.
Eventually, the claim becomes so extreme that we stop asking:
“Is this impressive?”
and start asking:
“Is this even possible?”
That is the point where credibility collapses.
Exaggeration has a threshold.
Beyond that threshold, adding more drama does not make a story more convincing.
It makes it less believable.

We can create a playful equation:
Credibility ≠ Exaggeration
Or:
More Exaggeration + Less Evidence = Less Credibility
And perhaps:
Storytelling + Imagination = Entertainment
but
Storytelling + False Certainty = Misinformation
That distinction matters far beyond jokes.
A Little Critical Thinking
Whenever we hear an extraordinary claim, we don't necessarily need to reject it immediately.
We can simply ask:
- What is the evidence?
- Is the claim physically possible?
- Does it contradict known facts?
- Is the storyteller exaggerating for entertainment?
- Is the statement being presented as humour or as truth?
The ability to ask these questions is itself a form of intellectual discipline.

Perhaps the winner wasn't the person who told the biggest lie.
Perhaps it was the person who understood exactly how far the audience was willing to believe.
Because in storytelling, comedy and even everyday communication:
A little imagination creates magic.
Too much imagination creates a lantern burning underwater.
And then someone has to shout:
“BHAI, BAND KARO! THIS IS TOO MUCH!”
